Engaging with Industry (previously Bridging the Gap) is a one-day course that aims to provide attendees with a deeper insight into the importance of external collaborations in academic research—especially with industrial partners—and how they can not only enhance career development but also form an important part of a university's ecosystem through REF Impact cases.

NOTE: This event is offered exclusively to researchers currently at Imperial College London. For other courses, please visit our training and events pages. Please register using your Imperial e-mail address, as places reserved without one may be cancelled.

The event will be run by a highly experienced facilitator from the academic technology commercialisation sector (Rob Marshall, who set up Cambridge Enterprise).

The day will start with a keynote presentation from a senior academic from Imperial College London, setting the scene for the rest of the day in the context of their own personal experience of working with industry and the benefits this has brought them.

Following this there will be a short presentation on the REF Impact programme and how Impact is an ongoing theme in the field of academic research.

Rob will then lead interactive group sessions to delve deeper into what type of organisations work with universities, how industrialists engage with a university or with academic researchers. There will be particular focus on how different engagement models and differing interests mean one needs to understand industry ‘drivers’.

There will then follow some skills training, including active listening, how to avoid the ‘dialogue of the deaf’, the principles of persuasion, and structuring your conversation. After an informal buffet lunch, there will be a panel discussion comprising experienced entrepreneurs and investors. The afternoon will be given over to practice: experience will be given in listening and pitching situations.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the value that your skills, research and know-how have for industry and society
  • Use proven methods for assessing, enhancing and articulating that value
  • Become increasingly skilled at ensuring that your research has effective impact for society as understood by the REF.
