Anatomical hip re-surfacing implants

Current hip resurfacing implant designs make no distinction between left and right hips or anatomical gender differences. This can cause problems with impingement, early loosening, restricted range of motion and accelerated wear.

Using normal CT scans and 3D reconstruction software, researchers at Imperial College London have created a new type of hip resurfacing implant which is shaped and contoured to reflect accurately human anatomy.

The revolutionary implant could improve the outcome of hip replacement surgery especially for active middle-aged people who can wear out implants quickly. A Proof of Concept project suggests the invention could deliver dramatically improved joint function.
